A Sigh of Relief

Long before my days of being a mother, I daydreamed of snuggling up on the couch with a blanket, a baby and a good children's book. Then Joseph came along. As wonderful of a child as he is, he has never shown an interest in books (except maybe chewing on them). I have repeatedly tried to engage him in the the funny pictures and crinkely appendages of our board book collection, but within seconds he is clammering to get to his toys. This is a bit surprising, considering that both of his parents are students. There are stacks of books in every room in our apartment. And Grandma Linda is a librarian. Books are in our blood! How could Joe not be interested in books? But then this past Tuesday a wonderful thing happened. While playing with Joseph in his bedroom, he reached for his books! I quickly grabbed a stack of 6 books, and headed for the couch. Joseph and I read every one of them together. He didn't ask once to get down from my lap, and didn't chew on a single book! What a sigh of relief! Joseph really is my son. They didn't accidentally switch babies at the hospital. To celebrate, we headed to the library the very next morning. At the library, Joseph was more interested in the other kids and the toy castle than the actual books. But when we got home, we read two more books together, and have been reading every day since.
